The Swedish Program’s curriculum is distinguished by its comparative - European - perspective and commitment to an innovative pedagogical style. Students can select courses which provide opportunities for active participation through small group discussions, tutorials, creative writing assignments, and study visits.

Academic Standards

The Swedish Program’s high academic standards are in accordance with the traditions established by all participating American colleges and universities. We believe that a commitment to learning in the classroom leads to a more rewarding intercultural experience. The more our students learn about Sweden - its language, history, politics, and culture - the more likely they will be to assimilate culturally.

Study Visits

Each semester the Program organizes study visits to political organizations, research institutes, corporations, and museums. These visits, which complement classroom instruction, promote active learning through direct observation and discussion with Swedish professionals. Study visits vary from semester to semester. Past visits have included the Swedish Parliament, Swedish companies, Stockholm public schools, the Stockholm Royal Theater and Opera House, and the many art museums in the Stockholm area.

Language

All Program courses are taught in English. We do not require any prior background in Swedish Language nor is it required to take a language course while on the Program. However, we do recommend that students take a language course in Stockholm. Studying Swedish while living in Stockholm will help students to better understand their everyday cultural experiences. The introductory course focuses on practical conversational skills necessary to understand everyday life, from food to every aspect of popular culture. Advanced instruction is available for students with prior knowledge of Swedish.

Independent Studies
Internships

Independent studies and tutorials can be arranged in most disciplines, including the Natural Sciences. All independent studies must be approved by the relevant department chairperson at your own institution and by our Director prior to arrival in Stockholm. The approval process involves completing an independent study proposal form which is available through our office. A sample of past independent studies include:

1. Environmental Policy

2. Medical Ethics

3. Languages

4. Theater

5. Mathematics

6. Philosophy

The Program has two excellent opportunities for internships which we offer on a regular basis:

  1. The Stockholm International Film Festival. Program students have the opportunity to have internships every fall semester with this well regarded Festival: www.stockholmfilmfestival.se./en/. This internship provides students with the exciting opportunity to meet well known and up and coming film directors from all over the world. Moreover, you will have the chance to attend seminars and see many of the films presented at the Festival.
  2. The Stockholm Public Schools. Every Fall and Spring semester, our students have the opportunity to assist a public school teacher in the classroom with English instruction.  Our Students get inside the classroom and have the opportunity to learn first hand about the educational system in Sweden.

The internships for both the Film Festival and the public schools are limited to a few students each semester. Therefore, interested students are encouraged to apply early and submit your request for an internship with your application. Such requests should include a brief statement explaining your interest/background in either film or education, along with a resume. Internships will be awarded to qualified students on a first come first serve basis.

All internships are not for credit.  Internships are opportunities to further explore and understand Swedish society and culture through direct participation in organizational life and important cultural events.

The Faculty

Most of our faculty teach part-time for the Program and are full-time professors at Swedish universities Stockholm or are research associates at local research institutes.  All faculty are either Swedish citizens or residents.
