Summer 2019 Issue: News from Stockholm

Caitlin Hawley (Program Manager) joined The Swedish Program in 2016. Originally from Milwaukee, WI, where she earned her master’s degree in Sociology, she moved to Stockholm in 2012. She enjoys reading, visual arts, and hiking with her dog.

This March, we had the honor of hosting an alumni dinner in Stockholm. The night brought together nine Swedish Program students from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, including one student from our very first semester in 1987. It was inspiring to see how many alumni found their way back to Sweden, whether for a short stay or a lifetime.

For example, Jennifer (Novack) Alanko (Williams College ‘95) moved to Stockholm with her husband and children last year — nearly 25 years after attending the Program in 1994. The family lived in London for many years before relocating to Sweden.

Michael Kostur (Brown University ‘97) enjoyed the trip to Gotland when he attended the Program in 1996, and today he lives in Gotland with his Swedish wife and children. Michael recently developed an exciting new internship for Swedish Program students at his workplace, SS&C Advent.

We also saw some familiar faces. Maiya Johnson (University of Pennsylvania ‘16) and Sarah Wiggins (Tufts University ‘17) are currently pursuing master’s degrees at the Stockholm School of Economics. In total, four Swedish Program alumni have returned to SSE for graduate studies since we moved to the school in 2013, thanks in part to our joint scholarship for alumni.

We look forward to making alumni dinners a tradition and building our network of former students in Sweden and around the world. If you’d like to share your own updates, we’d love to hear from you – wherever you are.
