Student Handbook

Arrival Day: August 24, 2026 #

The information on this page applies to the Fall 2026 term only.

7:00 AM-3:00 PM: Arrival at Arlanda Airport #

In order to make it easier to identify you at the airport, please attach your Swedish Program luggage tag to your backpack or bag. The Program sends this luggage tag to incoming students via postal mail a few months prior to departure.

Private Shuttle in Terminal 4

Swedish Program staff will greet you in Terminal 4 at Arlanda Airport, where a private shuttle will take you to the student housing complex. Your flight will land in Terminal 2 or Terminal 5. After you collect your bags, please go to Terminal 4. You can use the Arlanda Express train to travel between terminals for free, or you can walk (approx. 10 minutes from Terminal 2 and 20 minutes from Terminal 5). In Terminal 4, exit to the outdoor bus terminal. The exact bus stop number will be added to this page on Arrival Day. The shuttle busses are black and from the company EkmanBuss.

The shuttle will depart approximately every hour from 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM. You do not need to pay or tip anything for the ride.

Staff wearing blue Swedish Program sweatshirts will be stationed at Terminal 4 in case you need help finding the shuttle bus. If you are confused or can’t find a staff member, please don’t hesitate to email stockholm@swedishprogram.org with your location and a staff member will assist you as soon as possible. Arlanda Airport provides free WiFi.

Travel Delays

Delays are common and no cause for panic. We will track the flight number that you provided, so you don’t need to contact us if your flight is delayed. However, if you are rebooked onto a different flight, please send your new flight number and arrival time to stockholm@swedishprogram.org as soon as possible.

If you are so delayed that you arrive after the last shuttle departs the airport at 4:00 PM, please take a taxi to your apartment. We recommend selecting a car from the company Taxi Stockholm and asking for a fixed price fare, or “fastpris” in Swedish. Tipping is not obligatory, but you may wish to tip 5-10% for assistance with your luggage. The Program will reimburse you for the cost of the ride, which is typically 600-800 SEK ($60-$80), if you email your receipt to stockholm@swedishprogram.org. If you arrive at the apartment complex after 5:00 PM, see Early and Late Arrivals below.

8:30AM-5:00PM: Apartment Move-In #

Between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, staff will meet students at the main reception area of the apartment complex. Make sure to download and activate the Boxxy App (Apartment Keys) on your phone so that you can enter the complex. Staff will provide your apartment key and show you to your apartment.

After settling in, we recommend taking a walk around the neighborhood. Fresh air and daylight are essential to overcoming jet lag! Try your first Swedish pastry at Spånga Konditori (a student favorite) or grab a few groceries from Coop or Lidl. If you plan to use a Swedish mobile phone plan, visit a brick-and-mortar store to set up your plan. Mobile operator Telia has locations in Vällingby Centrum (closest to student housing) and on Kungsgatan in the city center (closest to campus).

Early and Late Arrivals

If you arrive to Stockholm before August 24 (see Early Arrival or Late Departure), please meet staff at the apartment complex during the move-in period. Please send your approximate move-in time to stockholm@swedishprogram.org for planning purposes.

If you get to the apartment complex after 5:00 PM on August 24, staff will send you an email with instructions for retrieving your keys. Make sure to download and activate the Boxxy App (Apartment Keys) on your phone so that you can enter the apartment complex. Please email us at stockholm@swedishprogram.org when you arrive at your apartment so that we know you have arrived safely.

If you need toiletries, snacks, or a phone charger, you can find them nearby at the Coop grocery store (open until 10:00 PM) or the St1 gas station (open until midnight).

If you need other items, we suggest visiting the mall at Vällingby Centrum for a wide variety of stores open until 8:00 PM. Vällingby Centrum is located about 9 minutes away by car (see Taxi Services) or 27 minutes by public transit.

5:15 PM: Neighborhood Tour & Dinner #

Meet staff in the main reception area and receive your green SL Access card, which covers unlimited public transit in Stockholm. Staff will lead a brief neighborhood tour followed by dinner at a nearby restaurant. We strongly encourage students to attend these activities, but we understand that sometimes students don’t feel well after a long day of travel. If you decide not to attend the tour and/or dinner, please inform staff at stockholm@swedishprogram.org so that we know that you are accounted for.
