Alcohol and Other Drugs #

Participants in The Swedish Program are expected to respect Swedish laws.

Swedish laws on drug use are very strict. Possession or sale of even small quantities of drugs may be sufficient reason to be expelled from the country.

Drinking alcoholic beverages in restaurants is legal from 18 years of age, but some establishments set older age minimums for entry, such as 23 or 25. You must be 20 years old to purchase alcohol at Systembolaget, the government-owned liquor distributor.

Students are responsible for their own actions at all times, including while drinking legally, and inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The Swedish Program reserves the right to take disciplinary action if individuals engage in disruptive, abusive, or illegal drinking or substance use. This can include formal letters sent to your home university and expulsion from the Program.

If you are struggling with substance or alcohol use, please inform a staff member. We can refer you to professional counseling and discuss other options for support.
