Health Insurance & Payment #
CISI Policy and Coverage #
The Swedish Program provides health insurance from CISI (Cultural Insurance Services International). The insurance is specifically designed for students living abroad and is valid anywhere outside of the United States. In general, the policy covers medically-necessary treatment for acute and emergency healthcare. Read through the policy carefully to familiarize yourself with your coverage and exclusions.
If you have any questions about your coverage, benefits, or claims, please contact CISI by calling +1 (203) 399-5130 (Monday to Friday from 9:00–17:00 EST) or emailing [email protected] (responses may take 2–4 business days). Please include your policy number on all communications.
CISI ID Card #
After submitting your registration forms and tuition deposit to The Swedish Program, you received a welcome email from CISI. This email includes your ID card, policy brochure, proof of insurance for your residence permit application, and other important information.
Whenever you visit a healthcare provider, have your CISI ID card accessible. We strongly recommend downloading these documents to your phone and/or printing hard copies for your wallet. You can also download your insurance documents through the CISI Traveler app.
The CISI Traveler App #
Download the CISI Traveler app for iPhone or Android.
This app can be used to view/email health insurance documents, display insurance ID cards, get help filing a claim, view country-specific travel alerts, and more. Please download your documents for offline access in the app.
If you already created an account on the CISI website, use the same login credentials in the app. If not, click “Register” to create an account.

Minor Injuries or Illnesses #
Swedish Program Partners: No Upfront Payment #
The Swedish Program’s healthcare partners (Dr. Daria Eriksson and associates, Svea KBT, Eva-Mari Thomas, and Dr. Angela Marré-Lippitz) have payment agreements with CISI wherein they can bill CISI directly for your care. This means you do not need to pay anything out-of-pocket when visiting these partners as long as the health issue is covered by your policy and you provide your CISI participant ID card and any other information needed for billing.
If you fail to provide your CISI participant ID card or other necessary information, you will need to pay for your care upfront. Save your receipts so that you can file a claim for reimbursement from CISI.
Other Healthcare Providers: Pay Upfront and File a Claim for Reimbursement #
If you visit any other healthcare provider while you are abroad, ask the provider if they are willing to bill CISI directly. If so, your CISI ID card lists the billing address and contact information.
If the healthcare provider is not willing to bill CISI directly, which is the norm, you will need to pay for your healthcare visit out-of-pocket and later file a claim for reimbursement from CISI. Be sure to save all receipts and records related to your care. Visiting a health clinic, specialist, or urgent care facility in Sweden typically costs around 1500–2000 SEK ($140–190 USD).
Serious or Emergency Care #
If you require expensive treatment or hospitalization, please contact CISI’s 24/7 emergency assistance provider, AXA Assistance, by calling +1 (312) 935-1703 or emailing [email protected]. They will do their utmost to arrange direct billing with the hospital.
If the hospital is not willing to bill CISI directly, you will need to pay for your healthcare visit out-of-pocket and later file a claim for reimbursement from CISI. Be sure to save all receipts and records related to your care. Hospital or ER care in Sweden typically costs 3500-6000 SEK ($330–570 USD).
File a Claim for Reimbursement #
To file a claim for reimbursement, fill out the claim form included in your policy brochure and send the completed form, along with copies of your receipts, to [email protected]. Claims are typically reimbursed two to three weeks after submission. If you have any questions about your benefits or filing a claim, please contact a CISI Claims representative by calling +1 (203) 399-5130 (Monday to Friday from 9:00–17:00 EST) or emailing [email protected] (responses may take 2–4 business days). Please include your policy number on all communications.
