Course Registration #

Course Selection #

Please review our website for course descriptions and syllabi. Students take four courses each semester. Students may choose to take four Swedish Program courses or take three Swedish Program courses and one SSE direct enrollment course. All courses are worth 4 semester hours of credit and taught in English.

Swedish Program Courses #

Swedish Program courses follow the American academic calendar with 12 weeks of instruction per semester.

Some Swedish Program courses (marked * on the website) are open to both Swedish Program students and SSE students, while others (marked with no asterisk) are open to Swedish Program students only. Thus, you may share the classroom with SSE students.

For grading scales, see Grades & Transcripts.

SSE Direct Enrollment Courses #

Direct enrollment courses (marked ** on the website) give you the opportunity to enroll directly in a course offered by the Stockholm School of Economics. Joining a direct enrollment class means getting full immersion into the Swedish classroom. This involves key differences in the course schedule and pedagogical approach.

SSE direct enrollment courses follow the Swedish academic calendar, which means that coursework is concentrated into eight weeks of instruction rather than 12 weeks. Thus, students who select a direct enrollment course should expect a more intense pace and additional workload during the first eight weeks of the semester. Due to this schedule, students may register for only one SSE direct enrollment course per semester.

SSE courses are generally structured with few assignments, and in some cases, only a final exam. Students are expected to study regularly throughout the course period without graded assignments or prompting from the instructor. Students must be independent and proactive in asking questions, requesting specific feedback, and seeking help when needed. Group work and collaboration are also common features of the Swedish classroom. Students who select a direct enrollment should be prepared to embrace these cultural differences, as these differences are what make the experience so rewarding.

Students must bring their passport as identification to SSE exams. For SSE exam dates, see the Academic Calendar. For grading scales, see Grades & Transcripts.

Course Registration and Changes #

Students select their four courses when completing their Registration Form.  Students are responsible for confirming, in advance of the semester in Stockholm, that their selected courses will transfer and receive appropriate credit at their home institution.

Course registration changes may be requested up to one week prior to Arrival Day. While we will make every effort to accommodate these requests, all changes are subject to course availability, including enrollment limits and classroom capacity.

The course schedule is developed based on students’ initial selections to minimize time conflicts. Please note that changes to course selections after registration may result in scheduling conflicts. There is no add/drop period; all course registrations are final as of one week prior to Arrival Day.

Prerequisites #

Please review the course descriptions on our website for any applicable prerequisites. We will honor any AP course credit that has been accepted by your home institution.

For economics courses with multiple prerequisites, students lacking one prerequisite may be able to enroll with permission from the Executive Director. For SSE economics courses (direct enrollment), students must have a GPA of at least 3.5 in prior economics courses.

Enrollment Limits #

Please review the course descriptions on our website for any applicable enrollment limits. Please note that all SSE direct enrollment courses have enrollment limits, so interested students are encouraged to apply early.

Swedish Language Course #

We strongly recommend that students take a Swedish language course, but it is not required by The Swedish Program unless it is a requirement of your home institution. It is your responsibility to know your school’s requirements before registering.

Students who have prior knowledge of the language and enroll in Swedish II or Advanced Swedish will be contacted by our Swedish instructor to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level of instruction.

Course Schedule #

Courses are held Monday through Friday, generally between the hours of 8:00–18:00 (8:00 AM–6:00 PM).

We create the weekly schedule after all students have selected their courses in order to minimize course conflicts. If any of your selected courses have a scheduling conflict, you will be notified one to three months before the start of the semester. You will receive your weekly course schedule during orientation in Stockholm.

For more information, see Attendance & Schedule.

Independent Study #

This course option is only open to academic year students in their second semester.

Students who are attending the Swedish Program for the full academic year may enroll in an independent study in their second semester. The independent study replaces 1 of the student’s 4 courses and is worth 4 credits. If you wish to enroll in an independent study, all such work must be approved by our Executive Director and your academic advisor or the chair of the relevant department at your home institution. It is your responsibility to be aware of your home institution’s regulations and/or obligations for conducting an independent study abroad.

Please create and submit a proposal via the Independent Study Proposal Form by July 15. Your proposal should be 1+ pages in length and should clearly describe the intended objectives of the independent study and anticipated procedures to attain those objectives. If appropriate, please include a bibliography. Please also list prior coursework that is relevant to your proposal.

Upon receiving your proposal, we will make every effort to find an appropriate supervisor in Stockholm. However, we cannot guarantee that your proposed independent study can be arranged. If it cannot be arranged, you will be notified by November 1 and you will enroll in a fourth course for the spring semester. The earlier you submit your Independent Study Proposal, the more time the Swedish Program has to find an appropriate supervisor.

There is an additional course fee of $950 to arrange an independent study. This fee is non-refundable unless we are unable to find an appropriate supervisor in Stockholm, in which case you will be refunded in full. If you receive financial aid but your aid doesn’t cover this expense, you can request a fee waiver during registration. Please ask your Office of Financial Aid to complete the Independent Study Fee Waiver Form by July 15.
