Healthcare Providers #
The Swedish Program partners with several healthcare providers to help you manage your physical and mental health. Our healthcare partners have payment agreements with CISI, your health insurance provider. This means that you will not need to pay anything out-of-pocket for visits covered by your insurance policy as long as you provide your CISI participant ID number. For more information, see Health Insurance & Payment.
If you need after-hours medical advice, or if you’re not sure how urgently you should seek care, call 1177 (from a non-Swedish number, +46 771-117700) to get advice from a nurse on how to proceed. Based on your symptoms, the nurse will make a recommendation for your next steps. For more information, see After-Hours Help.

Pharmacies (Apotek) #
Pharmacy staff are very knowledgeable about how to treat common ailments, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Pharmacies sell over-the-counter drugs and a variety of personal items, including products for first aid, eye care, dental care, grooming/cosmetics, and sexual health. Please be aware that strong cold medicine similar to Sudafed requires a prescription in Sweden, but you can purchase other kinds of cold medicine and pain relievers over the counter. Ask pharmacy staff if you are unsure of what to choose.
If you need a prescription drug while in Sweden, you must visit a doctor (see Prescription Drugs).
Common pharmacy chains include Apoteket, Apotek Hjärtat, Apoteksgruppen, Kronans Apotek, and Lloyds Apotek. Pharmacies are typically open between 10:00 and 19:00, but hours vary by location.

Independent Travel #
The number for emergency services throughout Europe is 112.
Program staff do not have expertise related to the healthcare systems, resources, clinics, etc. in other countries. If you need to seek healthcare during independent travel, you can search for in-person providers in your current location in the myCISI portal, or find a local recommendation by, for example, asking at your hotel’s reception desk or using a search engine. You will typically need to pay for costs upfront, then submit your receipts to your health insurance provider CISI for reimbursement (see Health Insurance & Payment). Make sure to save all receipts and records related to your care so that you can file a claim for reimbursement.
- If the healthcare provider requires upfront payment, you will need to pay out-of-pocket and file a claim for reimbursement from CISI.
- If the provider is willing to send an invoice, ask if they can invoice CISI directly. If so, your CISI ID card lists CISI’s billing address and contact information. If the provider cannot invoice CISI directly, provide your personal contact details instead. As soon as you receive the invoice, file a claim with CISI immediately so that CISI can pay the invoice before its due date.
- If you require long or expensive treatment, including hospitalization, please contact CISI’s 24/7 emergency assistance provider, AXA Assistance, by calling +1 (312) 935-1703 or emailing medassist-usa@axa-assistance.us. They will do their utmost to arrange direct billing with the hospital.
