The four seasons in Stockholm are similar to, but milder than, the four seasons in New England or the midwest. Due to Stockholm’s coastal location, winters are not as cold or snowy as most people imagine. During the fall semester, temperatures typically range from 75°F in August down to 30°F in December. During the spring semester, temperatures typically start around 25°F in January and rise to 65°F in May.
Most students find that Stockholm’s winter weather is milder than expected, but they spend more time outdoors in that weather compared to at home. In Stockholm, you will walk to and from public transit stations, the grocery store, the gym, etc. rather than taking a car, so weather-appropriate clothing will be key to your comfort. Sweden’s cultural respect for nature translates into most Swedes enjoying time outdoors rain or shine, and a popular Swedish saying goes, “Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder” – “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” Be prepared for some rain, snow, and ice. Of course, you can purchase good outerwear and clothing in Stockholm if needed.
