Bring a Semester-Long Supply #
Students who use prescription drugs should bring a large enough supply to last the entire semester. This can often be arranged by contacting your physician and insurance company.
You will not be able to fill an American prescription in Sweden, and it is illegal to ship prescription or non-prescription drugs in the mail. You can learn more about bringing medication to Sweden on the website for Tullverket, the Swedish import authority.
Controlled Substances #
If you rely on a prescription drug that is not permitted in Sweden (such as certain narcotics) or cannot be issued in sufficient supply, please contact [email protected] and we will put you in touch with our physician in Stockholm.
Please be aware that strong cold medicine such as Sudafed requires a prescription in Sweden, but you can purchase other kinds of cold medicine and pain relievers over the counter. Students who rely on a specific cold medicine are advised to bring a small supply with them.
Filling a Prescription in Sweden #
You cannot fill a foreign drug prescription in Sweden. You must visit a Swedish physician to receive a new prescription. To visit a physician, see Healthcare Providers.
Prescriptions are issued digitally in Sweden. If a doctor has issued a prescription to you, you can pick it up from any pharmacy by providing your passport as ID. Save all the documentation (including your receipt and any records attached to the packaging) to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement (see Health Insurance & Payment).
For more information about pharmacies, see Pharmacies.
